Tamil Nadu Takkali Sadam

  • 4 Large tomatoes chopped
  • 1 Medium sliced onion
  • 2 Green chillies slit in between


  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 1/2 Tsp ghee
  • 3 Sprigs curry leaves
  • 1 Tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 Tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 Tbsp chana dal
  • 1/2 Tsp urad dal
  • 5-7 Cashew nuts
  • Pinch of hing
  • 2 Cloves garlic


  • 1/2 Tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1 Tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 Tsp cumin powder
  • 1/4 bunch of coriander leaves

Step by Step Instructions

  • Heat oil and ghee in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds when they start to splutter add chana dal, urad dal and cashew nuts.
  • Fry until golden brown, add hing, curry leaves and geen chillies fry until you feel the aroma.
  • Then add onions and fry until transparent, add garlic, tomatoes and cook until soft, it forms a gravy.
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and saute until the tomato gravy loses moisture and until the oil separates .
  • Check the salt, transfer the rice and begin to mix gently until the rice is coated well with the tomato mixture and fry for 2 minutes or so on low flame.
  • Sprinkle the coriander leaves and serve with raita.
